Sample: nominal vs real returns

The headline number
A deposit that pays 7% a year sounds steady. But what matters for everyday life is what the money can buy afterwards.
Taking out inflation
If prices rise 5% over the same year, the real gain is closer to 1.9%, not 2%. The exact calculation divides one plus the return by one plus inflation.
The other side
Inflation is not the same for every household. A basket heavy in food or fuel can rise faster than the average, and a different basket can rise slower. Averages hide that.
What would change the picture
If inflation fell below the deposit rate, the real gain would widen. If it rose above it, the real return would turn negative.
